The Cabinet Secretary for Education, Prof. George Magoha this afternoon is set to release 2019 KCPE results at Mitihani House on Dennis Pritt Road at 2.00pm
 
Education CS Prof. George Magoha will release KCPE examination results, the ceremony will be held at the Mitihani House on Dennis Pritt Road, Nairobi. The Kenya National Examination Council has confirmed.

President Uhuru Kenyatta had on Sunday hinted the release of the results for the 1,060,703 candidates who registered for the exam.

KNEC at the same time issued the official number/code that students can use to get their results.

“For your KCPE 2019 results send SMS with ‘Index Number’ to 20076,” the council said in a tweet.

KCPE was administered between October 29 to November 1.

The government has pledged a 100 per cent transition to secondary school. Candidates will have calling letters before Christmas.

Application Guidelines

  1. To apply, login to the Student’s Portal using your KCSE Index Number and KCSE Year. Use your Birth Certificate Number/KCPE Index Number as the Password.
  2. All programmes have minimum subject requirements. You will only be able to apply for a course whose minimum requirements you meet, but the selection will be determined by the overall performance and the available capacity.
  3. You may view the available programmes and their requirements by clicking the Programmes tab in the portal. You can also search for courses by institution, using the Institutions tab.
  4. As you select the programmes, you may move the ones that interest you into the Course Basket. This will enable you to work with a shorter list when preparing your final list of courses to apply for.
  5. Once you have settled on your preferred courses, you will only be required to enter the Programme Codes.
  6. To apply, use the Application/Revision tab to enter the Programme Codes.
  7. After confirming that the Programme Codes entered are for the courses you would like to apply for, please submit and follow the application fee payment instructions.
  8. An application processing fee is charged as follows:
    • Students applying for the first time – Ksh 1,500
    • Students revising their choices submitted in school – Ksh1,000
  9. The placement processing fee should be paid after you have selected courses.
  10. You are advised to keep your transaction code safely. It will be required before you make any subsequent changes to your application.

How to Pay

  1. Go to your Lipa na M-PESA Menu
  2. Select Pay Bill
  3. Enter Business Number 820201
  4. For the Account Number, enter your KCSE Year and KCSE Index Number (no space)
  5. Enter your M-PESA PIN and Send.

The online application portal will open soon for the 2020/2021 placement to institutions of higher learning.

ADVERTISEMENT  FOR   RECRUITMENT  OF   GENERAL  SERVICE  OFFICER (GSO) CADETS, SPECIALIST OFFICERS, GENERAL DUTY RECRUITS, TRADESMEN/WOMEN   AND   DEFENCE   FORCES   CONSTABLES   INTO   THE KENYA DEFENCE FORCES

  1. The  Kenya  Defence  Forces  (KDF)  is  pleased  to  announce  to  the  general  public  the recruitment  of  General  Service  Officer  (GSO)  Cadets,  Specialist  Officers,  General  Duty Recruits, Tradesmen/women and Constables which is scheduled to take place in the month of October and November 2019.
  1.  CORRUPTION. Bribery and other acts of corruption are against the law. All persons presenting  themselves  for  recruitment  purposes  with  fake/falsified  documents  or  caught engaging in any corrupt activity shall be arrested and prosecuted. If you accept to be conned, you will lose your money or property and go to jail; it has happened to many citizens during past recruitments. Do not waste your money and risk imprisonment; NO ONE can influence the recruitment  process.  Report  any suspicious  activities  to the nearest  Police  Station  or a Military Camp. KDF recruitment is absolutely  FREE  TO ALL.
  1. The prospective  candidates willing to join the Kenya Defence Forces  MUST  meet the following conditions and academic qualifications:
  1. General Conditions

(1)    Be Kenyan citizen with no dual citizenship.

(2)    Be  in  possession  of  a valid  Kenyan  National  Identity  Card.  (4  Copies  of

National Identity Card and PIN certificate)

(3)    Age – between 18 and 26 years old for GSO Cadets, General Duty Recruits and Tradesmen/women with Certificate/Government Trade Test, not above 30 years for Specialist Officers, Tradesmen/women with Diploma, and not above 39 years for Chaplains/Imams.

(4)    Be physically and medically fit in accordance with the KDF standards. (5)    Have no criminal record.

(a) Men 1.60m (5ft 3in).
(b) Women 1.52m (5ft).

(a)    Men                 54.55 Kg (120 lb). (b)    Women           50.00 Kg (110 lb).

(8)    Female  candidates  must  NOT  be  pregnant  at  the  time  of recruitment  and during the entire duration of training.

  1. b. Minimum Academic  Qualifications

(1)     General Service  Officer  (GSO)  Cadets.  Must hold a minimum mean grade of B (Plain)  in KCSE  with at least C+ (Plus) in English,  Mathematics  and one Science  subject.  The training period  for this category  will cover three (3) years leading to a BSc in Military Science and Security Studies upon completion.

(2)     Specialist  Officers. Must hold a minimum mean grade of B (Plain) in KCSE with at least C+ (Plus) in English, Mathematics and one science subject. Must be a holder of an undergraduate degree from a recognized University/institution  and be registered with a statutory body where applicable. The training period for Specialist Officers will not be less than three months.

(3)      Servicemen/women  (General Duty) Recruits. Must hold a minimum mean grade of D (plain) in KCSE.

(4)     Tradesmen/women. Prospective candidates willing to apply must satisfy the conditions and requirements given below.

(a)     Technicians. A minimum mean grade of C (Plain) in KCSE, a relevant Diploma  or above from a recognized  Institution  and be registered with the relevant statutory bodies, where applicable.

(b)     Artisans.  A minimum mean grade of D+ (Plus) in KCSE and  either a relevant certificate with Government Trade Test Grade II  or Craft II from a recognized Institution.

(5)     Constables

  1. Vacancies

(a)    Be a retired Kenya Defence Forces Service Member or a retired National

Youth Serviceman/woman.

(b)    Be between the ages of 30 and 55 years old for retired KDF and between

35 and 45 years old for retired NYS.

(c)    Possess a Discharge Certificate with a minimum rating of “Very Good”

in conduct.

(d)    Must  have  served  for  at  least  9  years  Colour  Service  and  retired honourably from KDF.

  1. a. General Service Officer (GSO) Cadets
  1.  Specialist  Officers. In addition to the minimum academic qualifications, Specialist Officers must posses’ qualifications and where necessary be registered with the relevant Statutory Bodies for the vacancies below:

(1)    Medical  Officers. Must hold at least a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of

Surgery and be registered with Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board (MPDB).

(2)    Pharmacists. Must  hold at least  a Bachelor’s  degree  in Pharmacy  and be registered with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB).

(3)    Nursing Officers. Must hold at least a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and be registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK).

(4)    Dentists.  Must hold at least a Bachelor’s  degree in Dental Surgery and be registered with the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board (MPDB).

(5)    Laboratory  Technologists. Must  hold  a  Bachelor  of  Science  in  Medical

Laboratory Technology/Medical Laboratory Science.

(6)    Counselling  Psychologists.   Must  hold  at  least  a  Bachelor’s   degree  in

Counselling Psychology.

(7)    Public  Health  Officers. Must hold at least a Bachelor of Science degree in

Public Health/Environmental Science.

(8)    Cyber Security/Digital Forensic/IT Officers. Must hold at least a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science/Information Technology/Software Engineering/Networking.  Certification  in Cyber  Security,  Digital  Forensics,  and Ethical hacking or Information Security analysis will be added advantage.

(9)    Engineers. Must hold at least a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical, Electrical & Electronics, Telecommunication, Instrumentation and Control, Mechanical,  Marine,  Biomedical,  Naval  Architecture  and  Mechatronics Engineering and be registered with the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK).

(10)  Journalists. Must hold at least a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication majoring either in Broadcast Production or Public Relations with at least two (2) years working experience.

(11)  Lawyers.  Must  hold  at  least  a  Bachelor  of  Laws  (LLB)  degree  from  a recognized University, be an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, hold a current and valid practicing certificate  with at least two (2) years practicing experience. Experience in litigation will be an added advantage.

(12)  Physical  Training Officers. Must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Science or Bachelor of Education (Physical Education).

(13)  Finance/Accounting Officers.  Must hold at least a Bachelor of Commerce

(Finance/Accounting option).

(14)  Music Specialists.  Must hold at least a Bachelor’s degree in Music.

(15)  Chaplains/Imams.  Must  hold  a  Bachelor’s   degree  in  Theology/Islamic studies from a recognized Institution. Protestant Churches and Roman Catholic Chaplains  must  be  ordained  Ministers  and  recommended  by  Archbishop  and Episcopal  Conference  respectively.  Imams  must  be  recommended  by  the  Chief Kadhi.

(16)  Hospitality Management/Catering Officers. Must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management/ Food Production.

(17)  Entrepreneurship  and   Management  Officers.  Must  hold  a  Bachelor’s degree in Entrepreneurship.

(18)  Statistics  Officers.   Must  hold  a  Bachelor’s  degree  in  Statistics/Applied

Statistics/Actuarial Science.

1. The Kenya Defence always announce to the general public when there will be a recruitment of servicemen/women, constabularies, and tradesmen/women through its official website and media. The advertisement includes the dates for the recruitment to take place and various centres countrywide for the exercise.

Prospective candidates wishing to join Kenya Defence Forces must satisfy the conditions and requirements given below.

Bribery and other acts of corruption are against the law.

All persons presenting themselves for recruitment purposes at any centre with fake/ falsified calling letters, identity cards, academic certificates etc. or caught engaging in any corrupt activity shall be arrested and prosecuted.

If you accept to be conned, you will lose your money and go to jail; it happened to many during the last recruitment.

3. Citizens are further notified that recruitment is only conducted at the advertised recruitment centres countrywide during daytime before 1800 hours (6pm) on weekdays. Successful candidates will be issued with calling letters at the recruitment centres by the recruiting officers.

Any person purporting to recruit or issue an alleged calling letter away from a recruitment centre will be doing so fraudulently.

4. Recruitment of General Recruits and Constabularies

a. The KDF Recruiting Teams consisting of Kenya Army, Kenya Air Force, Kenya Navy and Defence Forces Constabulary will be visiting the recruiting centres as indicated below to recruit Servicemen/ Women, Defence Forces Constabularies on dates indicated.

b. All potential candidates reporting to the recruitment centres should come from the sub counties/ divisions of their respective counties and districts.

They should also bring with them current original national identity card and academic certificates/ testimonials.

ID photocopies/ scanned and police abstract will not be accepted.

The recruitment exercise will be absolutely Free.

C. Conditions for Servicemen/women

(1) Must be Kenyan citizens.
(2) Age: Between 18 and 26 years old.
(3) Be physically and mentally fit in accordance with the KDF standards.
(4) Have no criminal record.

Deposits are charged once on joining the school but must be topped up if deductions are made for losses or breakages. The deposit (or balance thereof) is refundable at the end of a pupil’s final term following clearance by the headteacher.

Year 11, 12 and 13 fees are billed in two tranches in August and December. Fees for all other years are billed in three tranches in August, December and April.

Important information about school fees

  1. Above Fees indicate costs for Tuition, Lunch, School Transport services, Boarding (where applicable) but do not include Enrolment or any applicable Examinations Fees.
  2. Applications for placement at the school are only processed on the return of a duly completed registration form and on the payment of a non-refundable registration fee of KSh 2,000/-. In certain Year Groups where vacancies are limited, a 20% advance payment of the tuition fee is payable against the First Term’s invoice. This advance payment is not refundable if confirmed places are not taken up. Children who cannot be accommodated immediately are put on a waiting list.
  3. Fees above are in Kenya Shillings. The above fees are fully inclusive of all approved textbooks and exercise books.
  4. Early payment discount: Fees are payable on or before the first day of each term. A discount of 3% on tuition fees is given when full payment is made within 6 days of the due date.
  5. Family discounts, on tuition fees only are allowed in bills as follows:
    2nd Child: 10%
    3rd Child: 20%
    4th Child: 30%
    5th & subsequent Child: 40%
  6. A surcharge of 1.25% is levied per month for the late payment of fees.
  7. Activity fees are charged separately and are normally accompanied by an official letter from the headteacher.
  8. A full term’s notice in writing and the headteacher’s acknowledgement in writing of the same is required for withdrawals else, a full term’s fees are payable in lieu of such notice.
  9. The Board of Directors reserves the right to alter the fees at five months notice.

Duration of the Scholarship: 2 years

  1. 1. BACKGROUND

The EAC Scholarship Programme is an initiative of the East African Community (EAC), the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) and German Development Bank- KfW. The project begun in 2018 when the EAC and IUCEA entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with KfW geared towards the training of students within the EAC Region. This Project aims at creating future change agents, who identify themselves with the integration agenda of the EAC and are willing to share economic and development-oriented expert knowledge. The goal of this initiative is to contribute towards training leaders that will foster the EAC Regional integration. This goal will be partly achieved through the establishment of academic collaboration and an exchange programme between universities/institutions within the EAC Region, by encouraging students to study in countries other than their own. In order to achieve these impacts, the project offers a comprehensive package including scholarships for Master’s programmes, internships, mentoring, networking events and further leadership training activities. The scholarship will support Master’s students in i) Mathematics,  ii)  Engineering,  iii)  Informatics,  iv)  Science,  v)  Technology and  vi) Business Science programmes.

The programme will include a minimum of 30 percent female students with a special consideration for South Sudan female applicants in order to support women’s participation and enhance gender equality.

IUCEA hereby invites applications from students who are citizens of the East African Community (EAC) Partner States (Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda) to apply for cohort 2 of the KfW- funded Master’s Scholarships.

  1. 2. OBJECTIVE

The objective of the programme is to train Master’s scholars who will serve as change agents for regional economic development and integration in the EAC.

  1. 3. SCHOLARSHIP DESIGN

The project offers financial support to academically skilled and disadvantaged Master’s students with the main focus on priority areas. Women and persons with disabilities are encouraged to join the programme. Up to 60 scholarships are available this year.

The scholarship covers:

  1. a) University tuition fees: payable directly to the university according to an official

invoice;

  1. b) Stipend: EUR380 per month to support living expenses including housing, food,

utilities, local transportation and settlement expenses;

  1. c) Allowances for  study  materials  and  research:    EUR  1,500  one-  off allowance;
  2. d) Medical insurance; and
  3. e) Extracurricular events: at least one event per yea

The students shall be required to apply to study in another EAC country (not their country of origin).

At the Universities/Institutions, mentors will be selected in order to support the students during the time of study and research. With the help of integrated internships, and extra-curricular activities, practical learning will be ensured through the universities and public-private partnerships undertakings. IUCEA will support the Universities/Institutions in the selection of the mentors and facilitation of the internships during the implementation of the Master’s programmes.

The financial cooperation arrangement shall finance the first three cohorts of approximately 157 Master’s students over their full study time of 2 years. After the first cohort has completed the studies, an independent evaluation of the level of attainment of the objectives of the project will be carried out, with the desirable impact being assessed.

The students will take part in extracurricular events at minimum of one event-visit per year per student. These could be networking events with representatives from political

and socio-economic spheres, whereby training on regional integration topics and other subjects based seminars are organized.

The minimum requirements for qualification into the programme are:

  1. a) Be a citizen of a partner state of the East African Community;
  1. b) Possess the required academic qualifications for admission to the programme (at least at the level of Upper Second Class Honours or “Distinction” as applicable;
  1. c) Submit a motivation letter in English (with not more than 500 words) as follows:

Demonstrates where they anticipate to see themselves professionally and academically in 5 and 10 years.

  1. e) Have obtained admission from a university in another country in the EAC Region other than their own.
  1. 6. APPLICATION PROCESS

Term 1: January 6, 2020 – April 10, 2020

Opening and Closing dates respectively for Pre-Primary, Primary and Secondary schools. There will be a total of 14 Weeks in the first term.

February 17th to 21st, 2020

Term 1 mid-term break for Pre-Primary, Primary and Secondary schools.

Term 2: May 4, 2020 – August 7, 2020

Opening and Closing dates respectively for Pre-Primary, Primary and Secondary schools. There will be a total of 14 Weeks in the second term.

Prolific surgeon and columnist Dr Yusuf Kodwavwalla Dawood died on 29 January, 2023 in the United Kingdom aged 94.

His son Jaan Yusuf broke the news of his demise on Saturday, saying “my dad slipped away from us in the early hours of this morning. May his soul rest in peace.”

For 38 years, Dr Yusuf K Dawood won himself a large loyal follower for his prolific Surgeon’s Diary column on Sunday Nation, and on Sunday, fans condoled with his family and friends after news of demise spread.

The Surgeons Diary has been running as a full page column in the ‘Sunday Nation’ for over 33 years and still commands a wide readership. Upon his readers’ requests, Dawood wrote the first volume of the trilogy based on the Diary in 1985 under the title, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. Off My Chest appeared in 1988, then Behind the Mask in 1995. Now a quartet, The Last Word wraps up the series. This delightful glimpse into the lighter side of the medical field makes being a surgeon bearable, and introduces the reader to an unknown aspect of the profession–humor.

Dr Yusuf Dawood, a seasoned author and a celebrated surgeon, Dawood 86, has practised medicine for almost 60 years, and 52 of these have been spent in Kenyan hospitals offering selfless service.

And when he announced that he would retire his scalpel, it was met with gloom by patients whom he had taken care of, now running into generations. Known for his popular Surgeon’s Diary column that runs in a local daily and in its 35th year, Dawood carved out his niche as a one-organ surgeon choosing to specialise on the treatment and management of breast cancer.

Described by his peers as the ‘breast-guy’, the soft spoken surgeon with a diminutive frame has dedicated his time and energies in breast cancer treatment, management and research for the last 60 years.

So passionate and driven is he that on his last day at work, he crowned it all with a mastectomy on a woman who had advanced breast cancer. “If age is not judged by years alone, but by the intensity of life-the life one has crowded into those years and not merely the years one has lived- then I can claim to have had a long and fascinating life,” writes Dr Kodwavwala, in his autobiography titled Nothing but the Truth-The Story of a Surgeon with Four Wives. The book is a fascinating story of his life’s journey as he pursues his passions- surgery, writing, Rotary and family, which he figuratively describes as his four wives.

A veteran surgeon, Dr Kodwavwala is perhaps widely known by his pen name, Yusuf K. Dawood, by which he writes the Surgeon’s Diary, a popular column that the Sunday Nation has published for thirty years now.

A Happy Childhood

Dr Kodwavwala hails from Bantwa, a tiny town in Saurashtra, western India, where he had quite an eventful childhood. His father, Dawood Kodwavwala, was born in a small village near Bantwa called

Kodwav, which explains the origin of the name Kodwavwala. Due to the difficulty in pronouncing and writing his surname, Dr Kodwavwala says he has often jokingly described it as a cross he has carried all

his life. When he came to Kenya in 1961 to work at the Aga Khan Hospital, the staff drastically reduced it

to Mr. K, a name that has stuck to date. His father was determined to ensure his children got

formal education. “We all ended up in the professions, my three elder brothers as lawyers and my younger brother and me as doctors. My only sister did not go as far because of early marriage necessitated by social constraints, but completed her schooling at a convent and spoke fluent English, to the utter amazement of community elders. This gave a sense of great pride and pleasure to my dad.”

Dream Almost Shattered

In1945, when he qualified in the equivalent of ‘A’ level examination, securing a place at his college

of choice-Grant Medical College (Bombay) proved impossible for Dr Kodwavwala. GMC, as it was

affectionately known, was a college of repute, but due to bureaucracy and cronyism, it was quite difficult to get a place by merit in those days. “When the list of successful candidates who gained admission to the Grant Medical College for the term commencing June 1946 was pasted on the college notice board, my name was missing. Up to the last moment, I was hoping against hope and now I was devastated,” he says. After several failed attempts at joining a medical school, Dr Kodwavwala opted for what he felt was the next best thing and in 1947, enrolled for a BSc (microbiology major) at St Xavier College, Bombay. He hoped this would afford him admission to a medical college afterwards. However, his disappointment was short-lived. It happened that his father had persistently appealed to the dean of

Miraj Medical School to give his son a place in the institution. Located 250 miles south of Bombay, Miraj

Christian Medical College was run by American missionaries. Being a Christian institution meant that

first priority was given to Christian applicants. About two weeks to the beginning of the term in October

1947, one student died. There was no time to look for another Christian student and Dr Kodwavwala

was admitted. He was thrilled. Dr Kodwavwala’s four-year stay at Miraj was mostly happy, but two of his saddest events in life happened while he was there. In September1948, his father was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus and succumbed three months later. Secondly, due to religious divisions, Pakistan broke away from India.

There was bloodshed, destruction of property and majority of Muslims in India fled to Pakistan.

Dr Kodwavwala’s family was among those that immigrated to Karachi. His home as he had known it

was no more and he felt his roots were lost. Suddenly, he became a foreigner in his own homeland.

Surgical Training

Despite the setbacks, Dr Kodwavwala completed his studies successfully and obtained the Licentiate

of the College of Physicians and Surgeons (LCPS) diploma. The only obstacle was that the authorities

decided to phase out the LCPS and merge it with the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery

(MBBS) degree, which was more widely recognized. They set up an 8-month upgrading course that LCPS

holders were required to take. Even though this was going to prolong his studies by another 8 months, Dr Kodwavwala was happy because his dream of going to Grant Medical College, which offered the MBBS, finally came true.

After obtaining his MBBS in 1953, Dr Kodwavwala worked as a house surgeon at the JJ Hospital

(Bombay) for a year. For his postgraduate, he went to the UK in 1955, where he attained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) in 1958, after successfully doing four surgical terms at Maidenhead, Blacknotley and Banbury Hospitals and Drewsbury General Infirmary. In the UK, he also met and married his wife, Marie before finally settling in Kenya. “I am a child of three continents and feel at home in all three.

I am an Asian by birth and upbringing, European by marriage and education and African by adoption and

choice,” he says.

Dr Kodwavwala longed to reunite with his family after attaining his Fellowship. In 1959, he moved to

Karachi with Marie with the hope of settling there, but that was not to be. After setting up private

practice in Karachi, Dr Kodwavwala experienced such severe ethical malpractices that after much soul

searching, he decided to go back to the UK. He had been in Karachi for only nine months. “I was young,

impressionable and very sensitive and when I saw such malpractices I felt I could not live with that for

the rest of my life,” he says. As he bid farewell to his family and friends, a fellow surgeon handed him an aerogramme from Nairobi, addressed to the dean of Dow Medical College  in Karachi. The newly opened Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi was looking for a qualified surgeon. Bearing in mind why he was leaving Karachi, Dr kodwavwala was at first skeptical about Nairobi, but nevertheless, he sent an enquiry to the Hospital’s administrator. Ten Months later, in October 1960, as he worked at the City General Hospital in Sheffield, UK, he received a reply from the Aga Khan Hospital inviting him to an interview in London. The interview went well, and was soon followed by a meeting with His Highness the Aga Khan. Dr Kodwavwala took up the offer and was due to fly to Nairobi the following year.

Exciting Times

Dr Kodwavwala arrived in Nairobi in March 1961. To his pleasant surprise, Nairobi turned out to be a

beautiful city. “Its altitude and perennial rainfall kept it constantly green and cool. The city was clean and well planned. There were no potholes, muggings nor traffic jams. Crime rate was low and services ran smoothly.

The downside was the racial segregation policy, which was observed strictly. Hospitals in Nairobi and

other big towns exclusively catered for the whites. Black Africans had nowhere to go except to the free

government hospital- King George the sixth (later named KNH),” he says.

The Aga Khan Hospital on the other hand, was a modern hospital that was open to all races. “Into this

compartmentalized healthcare, the entry of a wellbuilt, well equipped and well staffed hospital with

its multiracial concept was a progressive move, but unfortunately, majority of indigenous Africans could not afford the charges at the time.”

Even so, Dr Kodwavwala found his work at the hospital both intriguing and challenging. He was determined to make his surgical unit a centre of excellence.

Opened in 1958, The Aga Khan Hospital was the late Shah Sultan Mohammed Aga Khan’s idea. He built a

hospital as a philanthropic gesture to his followers-the Ismailia community in East Africa. In its early days, the hospital was not busy and the bed occupancy was quite low. Eventually, Dr Kodwavwala’s dedicated service

provided the hospital with much needed revenue. His patients filled a substantial part of the hospital’s private beds and general surgical wards. Politically, the 1960s were exciting years for Kenya.

Racial discrimination was on its way out after Kenya gained independence in 1963. On the family front,

the Kodwavwalas’ family grew bigger after the birth of their two children, Jenny and Jan, in 1964 and

1967 respectively. In addition, in March 1964 he was appointed full time consultant surgeon, “professionally I was very happy doing what I like doing most-clean, unadulterated surgical work. Surgical practice in Kenya was of high caliber and ethical.” To his relief, the level of ethical malpractice in Kenya was very low. At the peak of Dr Kodwavwala’s surgical career, the Aga Khan appointed him Executive Director of the Aga Khan Hospital in 1975. The hospital had been making losses year after year and at the helm, his responsibility was to turn its fortunes around.

Dr Kodwavwala agreed to take the challenge head on, but on condition that The Aga Khan would allow him to continue practicing as a surgeon. “Surgery is my first love. I had devoted all my formative years to becoming a surgeon and it would be such a waste of my training and talents to relinquish what came to me so naturally.” After taking office in October 1975, he soon realized that being the Executive Director of a loss-making hospital was like walking a tight rope. The job was demanding and stressful. He put in a number of measures that thankfully, saw the hospital break even after his first year in office.

The Author

Eventually, the pressure of running a complex hospital while still practicing surgery became too much for Dr Kodwavwala. Writing helped him to cope with the stress. “Writing worked as a balm for my jangled nerves. It even helped to maintain my sanity!” says Dr Kodwavwala.

He launched his first book, No Strings Attached, a fictional novel in March 1979. He has written nine more books:

General Conditions

Be a Kenyan citizen with no dual citizenship.

Be in possession of a valid Kenyan ID. Additionally, four copies of the ID and PIN certificates will be required.

Age – Between 18 and 26 years old for GSO cadets, general duty recruits and tradesmen/women with certificates/government trade test, not above 30 years for specialist officers, Tradesmen/women with diplomas, and not above 39 years for chaplains/imaams.

Be physically and medically fit in accordance with the KDF standards.

Have no criminal record.

Minimum Height :

(a) Men – 1.60m (5ft 3in)

(b) Women – 1.52m (5ft)

Minimum Weight :

(a) Men – 54.55 Kg (120 lb).

(b) Women – 50.00 Kg (110 lb).

Female candidates must not be pregnant at the time of recruitment and during the entire duration of training.

Specialist officers and tradesmen/women should have a minimum of two years of practising experience in their field of specialisation from the date of registration with the relevant regulatory/statutory body in Kenya.

Minimum Academic Qualifications

General Service Officer (GSO) Cadets. 

Must hold a minimum mean grade of B (Plain) in KCSE with C + in English, Mathematics and one Science subject. The training period for this category will cover three years leading to a BSc degree in Military Science and Security Studies upon completion.

General Service Officer (GSO) Cadet – Undergraduate Degree Holders.

Must hold the minimum requirement to qualify as GSO Cadet above and be a holder of an undergraduate degree from a recognized university/institution in any of the disciplines being recruited.

Specialist Officers.

Must hold the minimum requirement to qualify as GSO Cadet above except for chaplains / imaams who must hold a minimum mean grade of C + in KCSE.

Must be a holder of an undergraduate degree from a recognized university/ institution and be registered with a regulatory/statutory body (where applicable) in any of the disciplines listed.

The training period for specialist officers will be six months.

Servicemen/women General Duty Recruits. – Must hold a minimum mean grade of D (plain) in KCSE.

Tradesmen/women 

Prospective candidates willing to apply must satisfy the conditions and requirements given below :

(a) Technicians. A minimum mean grade of C ( Plain ) in KCSE, a relevant diploma or above from a recognized institution and be registered with the relevant statutory bodies, where applicable.

(b) Artisans. A minimum mean grade of D + in KCSE and either a relevant certificate with government trade test grade II or Craft II from a recognized institution.

(C) National Youth Service (NYS) trained technicians or artisans who meet the above requirements are encouraged to apply.

Constables

(a) Be a retired Kenya Defence Forces Service Member or a retired National

Youth Serviceman/woman.

(b) Be between the ages of 30 and 55 years old for retired KDF and between 35 and 45 years old for retired NYS.

(c) Possess a Discharge Certificate with a minimum rating of “Very Good” in conduct.

(d) Must have served for nine years in the Colour Service and retired honourably from KDF.

Deposits are charged once on joining the school but must be topped up if deductions are made for losses or breakages. The deposit (or balance thereof) is refundable at the end of a pupil’s final term following clearance by the headteacher.

Year 11, 12 and 13 fees are billed in two tranches in August and December. Fees for all other years are billed in three tranches in August, December and April.

Important information about school fees

  1. Above Fees indicate costs for Tuition, Lunch, School Transport services, Boarding (where applicable) but do not include Enrolment or any applicable Examinations Fees.
  2. Applications for placement at the school are only processed on the return of a duly completed registration form and on the payment of a non-refundable registration fee of KSh 2,000/-. In certain Year Groups where vacancies are limited, a 20% advance payment of the tuition fee is payable against the First Term’s invoice. This advance payment is not refundable if confirmed places are not taken up. Children who cannot be accommodated immediately are put on a waiting list.
  3. Fees above are in Kenya Shillings. The above fees are fully inclusive of all approved textbooks and exercise books.
  4. Early payment discount: Fees are payable on or before the first day of each term. A discount of 3% on tuition fees is given when full payment is made within 6 days of the due date.
  5. Family discounts, on tuition fees only are allowed in bills as follows:
    2nd Child: 10%
    3rd Child: 20%
    4th Child: 30%
    5th & subsequent Child: 40%
  6. A surcharge of 1.25% is levied per month for the late payment of fees.
  7. Activity fees are charged separately and are normally accompanied by an official letter from the headteacher.
  8. A full term’s notice in writing and the headteacher’s acknowledgement in writing of the same is required for withdrawals else, a full term’s fees are payable in lieu of such notice.
  9. The Board of Directors reserves the right to alter the fees at five months notice.

1.1 The time allowed for each paper is indicated against the name of the paper and NO EXTRA TIME IS TO BE ALLOWED.  In case of any discrepancy, the time stated on the question paper must be taken as correct. Candidates with Visual Impairment will NOT be given extra time other than what is stated on their respective papers. Any time allocated to reading through questions, studying maps etc, is included in the total time shown, except when special paper instructions indicate otherwise.

1.2          IMPORTANT NOTICE

3.0               INSTRUCTIONS TO SUPERVISORS, INVIGILATORS, TRAINERS AND CANDIDATES

3.1              Instructors are advised to ensure that the candidates read these instructions and guidelines carefully and adhere to them. The candidates should be made aware of the penalties for examination irregularities or misconduct.

 

3.2               GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES

3.2.1 Be at your seat in the Examination Room ten minutes before the time fixed for the examination in the various papers. 1st session will normally start at 8.30 a.m. followed by the 2nd session.  There will be a 30 minutes break between the sessions.

3.2.2       A candidate who arrives late will be required to give a satisfactory reason to the supervisor. Only in exceptional circumstances will a paper be given to any candidate who is more than half an hour late.  Absolute punctuality is essential for all papers.

3.2.3       Check the question paper you have been given to confirm that it is the paper you registered for.

3.2.4 If an examination paper for which you are not registered is handed to you, or if the questions indicate that a map or other material should also have been provided, inform the Supervisor at once.

3.2.5 Attend carefully to any general instructions that may be given on the first page of a paper, e.g. instructions limiting the number of questions that should be answered.

3.2.6       Check to ensure that each page of your question paper is printed.

3.2.7       Write your name, index number, signature and date on the answer booklet.

3.2.8     Write on both sides of the paper, but do not use the margins.  Begin the answer to each separate part of a question on a fresh line.

3.2.9 Write the number of the question clearly in the left-hand margin at the beginning of each answer.  Do not copy the question.  Be careful to use the same system of numbering as appears in the question paper.  Leave a blank line after the answer to each question.

3.2.10 Write your responses in black or blue ink.  You may use fountain pen or ball point pen.  Pencils should only be used for diagrams.  Bring mathematical and drawing instruments for subjects for which they will be needed.

3.2.11 Read each question carefully.  A lot of time may be wasted in writing down information that is not asked for and no marks will be given for it.

3.2.12          Do not spend too much time on one or two questions. Leave yourself adequate time to answer other questions.

3.2.13 As soon as notice is given to stop, make sure your name, index number, signature and date is written on the answer booklet and then hand it over to the supervisor/invigilator.

3.2.14                 Withdrawal from the examination should have been notified to the KNEC in writing before the examination begins.

 

3.3      CAUTION TO THE CANDIDATES

3.3.1 You are not allowed to leave the examination room before the end of the period allocated to the paper except with special permission from the supervisor.  NO CANDIDATE SO PERMITTED TO LEAVE MAY TAKE QUESTION PAPERS OUT OF THE EXAMINATION ROOM.

3.3.2 Do not leave a sheet of paper you have written on or your answer in such a position that another candidate can read them.  You should not give or obtain unfair assistance, or attempt to do so, whether by copying or in any form and your work should not show proof of such unfair assistance.

3.3.3          No communication whatsoever in whatever manner between candidates or with outsiders is allowed during the examination.

3.3.4 You are not allowed to have in your possession or in your proximity while in the examination room, any books, notes, papers or any other materials whatsoever except the correct question papers and any materials expressly authorized by the Kenya National Examinations Council.

3.3.5 You may only use mathematical tables printed by the Kenya National Examinations Council, and these should not contain any additional notes except the printed information.  If you are using a calculator as permitted by the Regulations, it should be the specified non programmable calculator.  If in doubt, check with the supervisor.

3.3.6       You must return immediately to the supervisor any question paper that has smudges or has errors or is badly printed.

3.3.7 You must not take any used or unused writing papers out of the examination room. Any rough work must be done on the official answer papers and, if not to be submitted with the answers, must be left on the desk to be collected by the supervisor and destroyed.

3.3.8                  Any misconduct or causing of disturbance in or near the examination room will be treated as an examination irregularity.

3.3.9 Cell phones or any other electronic communication device are prohibited in examination centres.  Any candidate caught in possession of a cell phone/any other electronic device will have his/her results cancelled.

 

3.4      PENALTY FOR EXAMINATION IRREGULARITIES

 

3.4.1 The KNEC Act No. 29 of 2012 Offences and Penalties stated in Sections 27 to 40 for cases of examination irregularities will apply. Some of the highlights in these Sectionsstate that:

 

3.4.1.1 A candidate who commits an examination irregularity in any paper will have the results for the whole subject cancelled.  Such a candidate will not be entitled to a result and will be awarded result “Y” overall.

3.4.1.2 If there is evidence of wide-spread irregularities in any examination centre, the examination results for the whole centre will be cancelled.

3.4.1.3    Any person who:-

  1. gains access to examination material and knowingly reveals the contents, whether orally or in writing, to an unauthorized party, whether a candidate or not, will be in violation of Section 27 of the Act and the penalty will be imprisonment for a term not exceeding ten years, or a fine not exceeding two million shillings or both;
  2. willfully and maliciously damages examination material will be in violation of Section 30 of the Act and the penalty will be imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years or a fine not exceeding five million shillings or both;
  3. is not registered to take a KNEC examination but, with intent to impersonate, presents or attempts to present himself to take the part of an enrolled candidate will be in violation of Section 31 of the Act, and shall be guilty of an offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years or a fine not exceeding two million shillings or both and shall be prohibited from taking an examination conducted by or on behalf of the Council for a period of three years.

 

3.4.2 Please ensure that you do not commit any examination irregularity to avoid having your results cancelled.
